Treasure Box from Beneath the Sea

Today I’m sharing my latest design team project for The Crafty Scrapper – a mystical treasure box that I created using papers from Graphic 45’s Voyage Beneath the Sea collection along with a G45 ATC Book Box that I altered.

First, I prepped my box by cutting a window in the front so you can peer inside at the treasure it holds. I added a design to the front using embossing paste and a Tim Holtz stencil. Then I painted the box using a mix of Tim Holtz sprays and paints to achieve a weathered, watery effect. Once my box was prepped, it was ready for embellishing!

I started by fussy cutting several of the designs from the steampunk-mermaid-inspired papers. Then I started layering the paper embellishments with shells, Petaloo flowers, and Maya Road metal embellishments.

Mermaid Treasure

I made this treasure box for a friend’s birthday. Since she’s received it, I can finally share it with you.

I started with a paper mache box that I layered in crackle paint, paint daubers, doodles, and pearl paint. I adhered a seafoam-y piece of patterned paper to the box lid. I gave my au natural mermaid a sparkly top and then added more sparkle to her luxurious tail.

Here’s a closer look at some of the treasures that surround her: fluffy flowers, sparkly beads and gems, and of course, sea pearls.

The real treasure is waiting inside. I wanted it to look like the inside of a pearl oyster, so I painted it in pale pink, silver, and pearl paints.
Here’s a look at some of the treasures: handmade flowers, vintage trims and findings, a few crafty supplies, and a whole lot of fun!

Starting an Art Journal

I have not been able to get into crafting yet this year. I finally got all of the Christmas decorations put away, so maybe that will help, even if I’m STILL not finished with my December Daily album. I am up to Dec 28th, so I’m making progress.

I’ve been wanting to create an art journal, but never got around to it. Then a wonderful friend asked if I’d do one with her. I jumped at the chance and got started right away. We decided to use old books for the journals and swap once a month or so.

Here is my book “before”:

I had this thirft store book laying around the house. I used some of my new paints that Husband bought me for Christmas. I started with Unbleached Titanium to cover up that ugly green cover.
I wish I had taken photos of each step. I’m getting better – I took a Before photo...
